Born and raised in Northern Virginia, RJ played for the Northern Virginia Hockey Club, Reston Raiders, Washington Little Caps, and Washington Junior Caps.
RJ was selected as one of 40 participants for USA Hockey Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in the summer of 1996. He played two seasons as captain for the Washington Junior Capitals, finishing second on the team in scoring his final season (76 points in 41 games)
RJ was First Team All Met League in the 1999-2000 season.
RJ chose to pursue coaching after Junior hockey. He is a USA Hockey Level IV Coach and has held several positions as an instructor and coach with several prestigious hockey schools and Junior and college hockey clubs:
